5th Energy (BT)

We are going to study about ......ENERGY

I know you are all full of energy, sometimes even more than what your body can hold....

But... what is really ENERGY?

ENERGY is the ability to do work. Another word for POWER. It cannot be made or destroyed, it can only change into different forms.
Energy is everywhere around us (it takes energy to take a shower, cook lunch or run to school)

Kinetic energy: the energy of motion, movement.

  • Light: we can see it directly with our eyes. Light travels through waves.
  • Electrical: energy stored when charged particles attract or repel.
  • Thermal: energy produced when the molecules of a substance vibrate. The more heat a substance has, the more rapid the vibration of its molecules is.
  • Sound energy: a force causes an object to vibrate, making sounds.
  • Solar: energy created by the sun rays.
  • Hydropower: energy created by the movement of water.
  • Wind energy: energy created by the movement of wind.
Imagen relacionadaPotential energy: energy stored by an object as a result of its position

  •  Nuclear:  energy found inside the nucleus of atoms, that can only be released when atoms are split or divided.
  • Chemical: energy stored on the chemical bonds of molecules released during a chemical reaction.
  • Mechanical:  the energy that an object has because of its movement and position. Energy used to do work.
  • Gravitational

Renewable and non-renewable energy.
- Renewable energy is made from a source that nature will replace. Wind, water and sun. It is also called "Clean energy" or "green power"
-Solar energy: sun rays are turned into electricity using solar cells.
-Wind energy is transformed into electricity.
-Thermal energy comes from heat, generated by the movement of tiny particles
-Hydropower energy is the energy from the movement of water. This is transformed into electricity.
-Biomass: a type of energy derived from organic matters: wood or sunlight.
-Geothermal: the heat from the inside of the earth to generate energy.

-Non-renewable resources cannot be replaced once used: rocks, metals, fossil fuels (coal, petroleum, gas)

  • Fossil fuels: Most non-renewable energy sources are fossil fuels: coal, petroleum, and natural gas.
  • Uranium: Uranium is a chemical element

Conducting and Insulating materials
-Conducting materials allow the electricity to pass to another material like the previous one.
Examples: metals

-Insulating materials: are materials used to prevent the passage of heat, electricity or sound.
Examples: wood, plastic

How to save energy around us.
  • When you play video games or watch TV, turn them off when you are done.
  • Watch less TV – read a book instead!
  • Don’t leave your computer in standby – turn it off at the end of each day.
  • Avoid opening the fridge a thousand times a day.
  • If the air conditioner is on, close all of the doors and windows.
  • Shower – don’t bath!
  • Reuse or recycle whatever you can.
  • Keep the doors closed to avoid losing heat or coolness.
