This time 4th grade A wanted to learn about MINERALS.
But, What is a mineral???
1.- A mineral is a structured crystal found in nature, not man-made, with a specific chemical component.
We classify minerals according to their chemical composition.
-Pure minerals= elements (diamond)
-Sulphates: contain sulphur an dother metal, they are very fragile. (Gypsum)
-Oxides: mixtures of metals and oxigen. (Rubies)
Properties of minerals:
-Hardness: some are very hard, such as Limestone.
some are hard, such as Quartz
some are hard and transparent, as diamonds.
some are soft, such as Talc.
-Colour: they can have different colours: green, blue, red,...
-Lustre: shinines; bright or opaque.
-Shape: regular or irregular shapes.
What is a rock?
1.- A rock is a mixture or cluster of minerals and other inorganic materials.
2.- Types or rocks:
1: Igneous rocks: rocks formed by cooled and harden lava. For example: Granite and basalt.
2: Sedimentary rocks: rocks formed of layer of other rock fragments, animal or fossils. For example: Clay and limestone.
3: Metamorphic rocks: rocks formed of igneous and sedimentary rocks. For example: marble and slate.
USES of Minerals:
-Limestone is transformed in to concrete or cement to make roads and buildings. Is like glue.
-Quartz is used to make watches and electronics. Quartz sand is used to make glass.
-Diamonds are used in jewellery or drills for mining.
-Talc is so soft that it is used in talcum powder, for babies, for bastekball players (to keep their hands dry)
-Marble, granite and sandstone are used to make statues, decorations, buildings....
We can read again Julia's Power Point..Click and read!!!
Land erosion.
Erosion happens as a natural process (water, wind, movement of rocks....) or because human interference.
Now let's see some of the Power Points
